Healthy Holidays, with a special on Blue Spruce and Subalpine Fir!

Collecting on the Kaibab Plateau

This past October we made our annual collecting trip (pilgrimage) to the Kaibab Plateau. The southern edge of the Kaibab National Forest graces the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. It is one of the few small, high elevation eco systems in Arizona that is home to communities of Blue Spruce, Subalpine Fir and Common Juniper. The Forest Service gives us a short window of time for collecting in the fall because this is a protected area for the Gros Hawk and the Kaibab Squirrel. An interesting side note about Blue Spruce, is that the squirrels use only the most grand, mature specimens for their nesting sites. These trees are completely off limits to humans for any kind of use or disturbance, as they are vital to the health of the forest.

I was concerned that we would not be issued a permit this year because of a terrible fire that ravaged the northern part of the plateau, and because of the ongoing drought. Luckily the areas that we work in were untouched by the fire, and the trees closer to the rim are in good health due to a minor amount of summer monsoon rain. We received surprisingly nice yields of oil, and we’d like to pass on this good fortune with holiday discounts on these beautiful gifts from the forest. For the first time we are able to offer a 15 ml. size of the Blue Spruce, and a 1 oz. size of Subalpine Fir.
